Marcus was born on August 6, 1997 in Parma, Italy. He is the son of Lillian Thuram, record holder for most matches played for the French national team and winner of the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The child is named after the activist Marcus Garvey, a defender of human rights for blacks, since the parents named their son in honor of this public figure.
Initially, Lillian did not want his sons, Hefren and Marcus, to pursue football, as he was afraid that fans and journalists would compare their game to his achievements. However, the defender later changed his mind, wanting to continue the family sporting legacy. When the head of the family played for Barcelona, the boys would visit the Catalan team's training ground and players like Ronaldinho and Carles Puyol would come to their house.
